Do your research before working with someone especially when it comes to marketing.

Every day I wake up with multiple tabs open in Safari on all of my devices of stories I want to read.

Today, I finished reading this one, “Warning Signs: Are You Paying Your Marketing Agency Too Much?” It is a quick read and gives you something to think about before dropping a bunch of money on your marketing needs. What I want to share with you is the importance of doing a little research before you start writing the check. You work hard for your money and don’t have time to waste. You also don’t want to be taken for a ride.

I have heard horror stories of people being taking advantage of especially when it comes to web and marketing services and it frustrates the heck out of me.

Please, do me and yourself a favor, research even just for a few minutes so you know what you are getting into. Do a quick Google search on the person and the company.

Look at what comes up or in some cases doesn’t come up. Don’t forget to ask around and check sites like Yelp.

I recently saved a client (whom I had just started to work for) from signing a 6-month contract to pay $1,500+ a month to someone who claimed he would do all kinds of things to get her website to the number one spot on Google. Sounded like a great idea, right?

Who doesn’t want to be in the number one spot on Google?

Well, when I looked him up, his website was outdated, not mobile friendly (I try not to judge too hard here because if you are busy working with clients your site does suffer, but still come on), and had nothing impressive on it. Taking a look at his social sites, Facebook and Twitter, he barely had any followers. This guy was a joke!

Remember, your website should represent you and what you are offering especially if you advertise web design! It pays to do your research.
