As busy as she is, Shonda Rhimes still makes the time to say yes.

If you aren’t familiar with this writer/producer, you might be familiar with her work. Shonda Rhimes is responsible for shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Yet with all of the demands placed upon her, Shonda still finds it important to take time for herself. Before you read any further, take a moment to watch her TED Talk here.

Truly, it is incredibly important that we take the time really enjoy those moments where we break away. Taking the time to press “pause” and step away from our phone, social media, chores, etc. gives us time to simply focus on ourselves and our loved ones. I can personally attest to how overwhelmed I can feel when I realize that I haven’t taken the time to say yes to an uninterrupted break. For me, the more I “play” or take the breaks I need, the more my brain develops ideas I’ve been struggling with and inspires new concepts.

That’s why I quit my job at Apple. I didn’t want to be a slave to the “9 to 5” anymore. Working crazy shifts like 1-10 just didn’t make sense. That’s also why I make it a point to make purposeful decisions to rest. On a short term basis, I block out an hour every day to take a rest break and rejuvenate. I also block out the first week of July every year for my annual family trip. It’s the one time that we can all get together, be surrounded by nature, and NOT be connected. There is no wifi or cell service immediately available. The first time I did this, I almost said no. I almost left early because I was like an addict in rehab. But can I just tell you how free I felt after day 3?! And now I look forward to it every year.

Saying yes to moments for yourself is invaluable. If you want to be successful and healthy, you have to learn how to do it.

Now I’d love to hear what you think! Share your comments below and tell me, what are you going to start saying YES to?
